Gifts from IRAs

Everyone at age 70½ must begin cashing out IRAs with at least a required minimum distribution (RMD). RMDs must be withdrawn – they cannot be rolled over to another investment vehicle. RMD distributions can be made to qualified non-profit organizations like the Wolf-Moose Foundation. This is tax-free and is called a Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD).

Benefits:

  • The gift counts toward an individual’s required minimum distribution.

  • Individuals can direct an amount of up to $100,000 per year and it is still tax-free ($200,000 for married couples).

Donor Advised Funds (DAF)

Donor Advised Funds are set up for the sole purpose of supporting charitable organizations an individual cares about. An individual donates money to a DAF (e.g., a non-profit entity like VanGuard Charitable). The individual directs how the DAF invests the funds. The individual also decides when and where donations from the DAF - via grants - are sent to qualified charities.

Benefits

  • The donor receives the tax benefits immediately.

  • The money can be invested (tax-free) and grow over time.

  • The donor can direct funds to any IRS-qualified public charity (e.g., Wolf-Moose Foundation) via grants.

Charitable Gift Annuity

To establish a charitable gift annuity, an individual makes a gift to a non-profit and, in exchange, receives a fixed annual dollar amount for life as well as an immediate tax deduction. The principal remaining at the person’s death will then benefit the non-profit.

Benefits:

  • The gift generates an immediate charitable income-tax deduction.

  • The donor receives a lifetime stream of periodic income from the charity.

Retirement Plans

Use a Beneficiary Designation to leave retirement assets to the Wolf-Moose Foundation by naming the Wolf-Moose Foundation as a beneficiary of your retirement account. Contact your IRA custodian and ask for a beneficiary designation form.

Benefits:

  • Individuals continue to control their retirement assets and can take distributions anytime to meet their needs.

  • Bequests left to charity provide an estate tax deduction and are not subject to estate taxes.

Bequest

An individual provides a gift through their will or living trust.

Benefits: No impact on assets during the individual’s lifetime.
